Authorities of Serwaa Nyarko Girls Senior High School at Dichemso in the Ashanti region have hit the street of Kumasi to demonstrate, after a petition was rejected by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, over the encroachment of their school lands.
The students who came out in their numbers were seen with placards with several warning inscriptions to encroachers.
The students marched in their school uniform with red bands, expressing that, the encroachment poses a security threat to their lives.
Expressing their resentment to the media, the school authorities said that, several petitions sent to the regional minister, Manhyia Palace, Assembly Member for the Dekyemso Electoral area and the Kumasi metropolitan assembly proved futile.
Headmistress of the school, Esther Ntodwah, said, “The developer claims the mayor of Kumasi ordered him to continue with the construction of a property, which will only stop if the mayor orders him to discontinue with that construction.”
“We are however not safe with that construction and we are calling on the KMA and our regional minister to come to the school aid and assist us drive these encroachers.”
The president of the Student’s Representative Council of the school, Benedicta Dankwah also called on authorities to safeguard their safety, failure of which could lead to a more violent demonstration.
