Last night’s ceremony honoring football's top performers in Africa 2017 had Shatta Wale known in real life as Charles Nii Armah Mensah as one of the headline entertainers but the Ghanaian dancehall king was conspicuously missing.
This left many wondering what could have been the cause.
There are claims that Shatta Wale was not allowed to perform because he did not show up for dress rehearsals.
Another has it that Shatta was not happy with the way organizers handled the show so he left the premises.
Ghanaian musician Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jnr has finally broken silence on his disappearance at the just ended CAF Awards.
The hit-maker on Zylofon ‘Showbiz Agenda’ Friday, January 5, 2018, said there was a breach of contract on the part of the organisers so he decided to cancel his performance.
He said CAF had agreed with his management to pay him an undisclosed performance fee but later sent someone to pay him $30,000. This, according to him, was disrespect to Ghanaian artistes.
“I have worked with CAF before and I know how they go about their stuffs”.
CAF and my team had a different contract," he said. "But, a few days to the event, someone met with my management team that CAF is offering $30,000”
He admitted that he took the money but didn't step the venue to perform because he felt disrespected
“I have taken the money and nobody can take it from me because I didn’t sign any contract with anybody. I don’t know why somebody can just go and collect $30,000, come and give it to me and tell me to go and perform while I’ve not seen my contract,”
“I don’t have a contract with CAF. Nobody had contacted me”.
“Some of us should be very careful in this country. We are killing ourselves. I need to be paid well. This is my home” he added
“When they (CAF) wanted me in Nigeria last year, they wrote emails two months to the event before we were able to seal a deal. We had a schedule. Here in Ghana, two days to the event, someone will call me and say he has $30,000, rush and come meet my manager. As a smart man, I’ll save the $30,000 first and that’s what I did. I then asked them to go and bring the contract to show who agreed that I take such an amount for a show of that nature. So disrespectful!” he fumed.
Despite the answer he gave, Shatta Wale said his manager convinced him to go perform but what irked him was the fact that he was not allowed to do sound-check.
“We were told we can’t have our sound check because they had closed. Meanwhile, the Nigerian acts had been allowed to do theirs. I drove my car and came back home. I don’t like nonsense!” he fumed again.
The event saw performances from Ghanaian artistes; Efya and KiDi, Nigerian artistes; Patoranking, Phyno, Olamide, Wizkid and Tiwa Savage, Togolese artiste Toofan, Congolese artiste Fally Ipupa, among others but Wale was missing.
Efya performed the Ghana national anthem as the curtain raiser and the other acts performed as the show went on.
Kidi, we hear performed to a dispersing crowd.
This has also left many complaining that CAF disrespected Ghana by populating the stage with Nigeria acts.
