A Communication Member of the ruling New Patriotic Party, NPP in the Ashanti region, Sam Cudjoe has encouraged Ghanaians, particularly residents in the region to pay their taxes on permanent basis.
He noted that a nation’s development hinges on the payment of taxes by the citizenry. "Taxes are the main source of a country's infrastructural development," he said.
Sam Cudjoe who doubles as the former Communication Director and Regional Secretary of the NPP said this on Silver FM’s Omanbapa Show, when he was quizzed by the host Malik Bin, popularly known as ‘Prof’, to take a position on the TV License levy which has attracted a mixed reaction from the Ghanaian public.
The current institution of the eleven law courts across the country to prosecute and punish defaulters of the TV License levy did not go down well at all with the Ghanaian populace.
The Information Minister said the GBC Director, Dr. Kwame Akuffo Anoff-Ntow erred and acted on his own instructions without consulting the authority of the government for any such law courts constitution and tax implementation.
Sam Cudjoe, another NPP member contradictorily said the TV license levy is for the government and, referred to a statement by the GBC Director that GBC can’t access funds from the TV License levy without parliament approval.
According to him, collection of television license is not specifically meant for the State owned Ghana Broadcasting television but to build more infrastructure in the country.
He was of the view that if citizens are educated and made to understand the benefits of paying taxes, they would be motivated to pay.
However, he advised the Internal Revenue Service to come out with considerable rates (money) that would be affordable to lure the citizenry to patronize.
